Background of the Study

Television talk shows have become a powerful medium for promoting political and civic engagement, particularly among the youth. These programs, which often feature discussions on governance, policies, and societal issues, provide young people with opportunities to engage with political leaders and experts. In Jibia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, television talk shows have gained popularity, especially among the youth, who are increasingly interested in participating in governance and societal development. By discussing issues such as youth empowerment, political participation, and policy reforms, television talk shows can inspire and motivate young people to take active roles in their communities. This study aims to examine the impact of television talk shows on youth engagement in governance in Jibia, exploring how these programs influence youth attitudes toward political participation and governance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread appeal of television talk shows, there is limited research on how these programs specifically affect youth engagement in governance in rural areas like Jibia LGA. While the programs provide important political information, it is unclear how much they actually encourage young people to become involved in political processes, whether through voting, advocacy, or active participation in government. This study will assess the impact of television talk shows on youth engagement in governance in Jibia, examining both the positive and negative effects of these programs.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of television talk shows in enhancing youth engagement in governance in Jibia LGA.

  2. To examine how television talk shows influence youth attitudes toward political participation in Jibia.

  3. To identify challenges and limitations in the use of television talk shows to encourage youth involvement in governance.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do television talk shows influence youth engagement in governance in Jibia LGA?

  2. What aspects of television talk shows are most effective in encouraging youth political participation in Jibia?

  3. What challenges do television talk shows face in motivating youth to engage in governance in Jibia?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Television talk shows have a significant positive impact on youth engagement in governance in Jibia LGA.

  2. Youths who regularly watch television talk shows are more likely to engage in political activities and governance.

  3. Television talk shows face challenges such as limited audience reach and lack of interactive features in encouraging youth political participation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into how television talk shows can be used as a tool for enhancing youth participation in governance. The findings will be valuable for media practitioners, policymakers, and organizations that work with young people in Nigeria. Additionally, the study will contribute to the understanding of how mass media can influence political behavior and civic engagement among youth in rural areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of television talk shows in Jibia LGA, Katsina State. It will not address other forms of media or broader political engagement in the region. Limitations may include challenges in measuring the long-term impact of television talk shows on youth political behavior and the potential for bias in the content of talk shows.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
